Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Olumuyiwa Adejobi has praised the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, describing him as an exceptionally intelligent, innovative and knowledge-driven leader whose intellectual approach continues to shape contemporary policing in Nigeria.
Adejobi, who currently serves as the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations at the Delta State Police Command, made the remarks while reflecting on his professional relationship with the Inspector-General during their years of service together at the Lagos State Police Command.
According to the senior police officer, effective leadership is built on intelligence, sound judgment, strategic thinking and a deep understanding of human behaviour—qualities he believes the Inspector-General consistently demonstrates in both leadership and operational policing.
Recounting one of the many lessons he learned from the IGP, Adejobi said Disu introduced him to the concept of “Suicide by Police,” a psychological phenomenon that was unfamiliar to him at the time.
He explained that the discussion sparked his curiosity and prompted him to carry out extensive personal research into the subject in order to better understand the behavioural and psychological tendencies of individuals who deliberately provoke confrontations with law enforcement officers in pursuit of self-destructive outcomes.
According to Adejobi, the Inspector-General had explained that some individuals intentionally provoke police officers and other security personnel in the hope of triggering aggressive responses that ultimately fulfil their suicidal intentions.
The Delta State Operations DCP noted that the insight significantly expanded his understanding of human psychology and enhanced his appreciation of the complexities involved in managing emotionally distressed or volatile individuals during police operations.
He stressed that awareness of such behavioural patterns should serve as an important lesson for officers, particularly in the areas of emotional intelligence, anger management and self-control while carrying out their duties.
Adejobi observed that a better understanding of psychological triggers would enable officers to exercise greater restraint during tense encounters, thereby reducing the likelihood of unnecessary or excessive use of force while strengthening public confidence in law enforcement.
He further emphasized that modern policing extends beyond tactical proficiency, requiring officers to possess strong communication skills, psychological awareness and conflict de-escalation capabilities to effectively manage complex situations.
Describing the Inspector-General as a researcher, teacher and visionary leader, Adejobi said Disu’s commitment to professional development and knowledge-based policing continues to inspire officers across the Nigeria Police Force.
He advocated for the integration of behavioural psychology and emotional intelligence into police training curricula, noting that such reforms would improve officers’ decision-making, enhance community engagement and support the ongoing drive toward a more professional, accountable and citizen-focused police service.
Adejobi’s remarks align with the Nigeria Police Force’s ongoing efforts to strengthen professionalism, accountability and human rights-compliant policing through continuous training, capacity building and the adoption of modern policing strategies.
