ABUJA, Nigeria – The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has called for a stronger partnership between the Nigerian Army and Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank) to enhance troop welfare, financial inclusion and operational readiness amid the ongoing expansion of the Service, says Acting Director Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele
Speaking on Thursday at the Army Headquarters, Abuja, while receiving a delegation from GTBank led by its Executive Director, Mr Ahmed Liman, the Army Chief described the financial institution as a dependable partner whose innovative banking solutions have continued to complement the Nigerian Army’s transformation drive.
Lieutenant General Shaibu said the Federal Government’s approval for increased recruitment and the expansion of the Nigerian Army demand a responsive, technology-driven banking system capable of delivering seamless financial services to personnel across formations nationwide.
He noted that strengthened collaboration with GTBank would improve financial service delivery, enhance administrative efficiency and support the Army’s operational effectiveness.
The COAS also appealed to the bank to align more closely with the Nigerian Army’s Soldier First welfare philosophy by extending its Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives to wounded-in-action personnel as well as widows and orphans of fallen heroes.
He further urged GTBank to deploy Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) to newly established and remote military barracks to improve access to banking services, reduce unnecessary troop movement and enhance operational responsiveness.
Earlier, GTBank Executive Director, Mr Ahmed Liman, commended the Nigerian Army for its unwavering commitment to protecting Nigeria’s sovereignty and safeguarding lives and property.
He reaffirmed the bank’s commitment to deepening its partnership with the Service through tailored financial solutions that support its operational and administrative needs while complying fully with the Treasury Single Account (TSA) policy.
Liman highlighted the bank’s specialised services for government institutions, including dedicated trade desks for processing Letters of Credit for defence procurement, secure digital platforms for salary administration and contractor payments, and institutional funds management solutions.
He also showcased GTBank’s military-focused products, including the GT Patriot Account, which offers waived banking charges and concessionary lending rates for military personnel, as well as GT Pensions Management services aimed at strengthening the long-term financial security of Nigerian Army personnel.
The meeting underscored the growing collaboration between the Nigerian Army and the private sector in advancing troop welfare, improving service delivery and supporting national security objectives.
