Veteran Nollywood Actor and Scholar Kola Oyewo Dies at 80

The Nigerian entertainment industry has been thrown into mourning following the death of veteran actor, dramatist, and academic, Kola Oyewo, who passed away at the age of 80.


Oyewo, widely regarded as one of the pillars of Nigerian theatre and film, died on Friday, leaving behind a legacy that spanned more than five decades in the performing arts and academia.


Born on March 27, 1946, in Oba Ile, Osun State, Oyewo began his acting career in 1964 with the Oyin Adejobi Theatre Group. He rose to national prominence through his portrayal of Odewale in the celebrated play The Gods Are Not to Blame by renowned playwright Ola Rotimi.


Throughout his illustrious career, he featured in several acclaimed stage and screen productions, including Sango, Saworoide and Super Story, earning widespread respect for his exceptional talent and dedication to the arts.


Beyond his achievements as an actor, Oyewo distinguished himself as a scholar. He obtained a doctorate degree in Drama from the University of Ibadan and lectured at several higher institutions, including Obafemi Awolowo University, Redeemer’s University and Elizade University, where he mentored generations of students and theatre practitioners.


His passing comes just months after he celebrated his 80th birthday in March 2026, an occasion that attracted tributes from across Nigeria, including from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who described him as a national treasure and cultural icon.


As news of his death spread, tributes poured in from colleagues, fans, students, and cultural stakeholders, many of whom described him as a towering figure whose contributions helped shape modern Nigerian theatre and Nollywood.
