Osun Police Debunk Banditry Invasion Claims, Warn Against Spread of False Security Alerts

0 Admin

The Osun State Police Command has dismissed reports circulating on social media alleging a banditry invasion in parts of the state, describing the claims as false, misleading, and capable of causing unnecessary panic among residents.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, said extensive security assessments and intelligence-gathering operations conducted by the Command had not substantiated any of the claims being circulated online.

According to the statement, the Command expressed concern over the spread of unverified information, warning that such reports could create fear and tension among law-abiding citizens.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Gotan, warned individuals and groups involved in creating, publishing, and disseminating false security alerts to desist immediately, stressing that the spread of unverified information undermines public confidence and poses a threat to public peace and security.

He advised members of the public to verify security-related information through official channels before sharing it, adding that anyone found spreading false information capable of causing public disorder or inciting fear would be investigated and prosecuted in accordance with the law.

The police reassured residents of the Command’s commitment to protecting lives and property across the state, urging citizens to remain calm, vigilant, and continue their lawful activities without fear.

The statement noted that security agencies remain on high alert and that covert operatives as well as personnel from the Violent Crime Response Unit have been deployed across the state to monitor developments and respond swiftly to any security threats.

The Command also encouraged residents to report any suspicious movements or security concerns to the nearest police station or other security agencies for prompt action.
