Troops of Operation Enduring Peace (OPEP) have intensified security operations in Plateau State, arresting four suspected illicit drug peddlers and neutralising a suspected militia member during separate operations in Jos North and Jos South Local Government Areas.
The latest operations form part of sustained efforts by the military to dismantle criminal networks, combat illicit drug trafficking, and enhance security across the state.
In the first operation, troops acting on credible intelligence raided a suspected criminal hideout in the Congo Russia area of Jos North at about 10:30 p.m. on June 25.
The operation led to the arrest of four suspects identified as Isah Mohammed (20), Nura Kabil (19), Hamisu Rabiu (21), and Yakubu Mohammed (35).
During the raid, troops recovered quantities of substances suspected to be cannabis sativa from the suspects.
Military sources disclosed that the suspects have been profiled and are currently in custody for further investigation aimed at uncovering other members of the illicit drug network.
In a separate operation conducted at about 7:00 a.m. on June 26, troops responded to credible intelligence on the activities of armed livestock rustlers around the Gero high grounds in Jos South Local Government Area.
According to military sources, troops intercepted a herd of cattle allegedly grazing on cultivated farmland when they came under sporadic gunfire from suspected militia members.
The troops held their ground and called for reinforcements. Additional personnel from Sector 3 at Rafin Bauna, supported by troops led by the Commander of Sector 6, swiftly mobilised to the scene and engaged the attackers in a firefight.
During the exchange, one suspected militia member was neutralised, while others fled into the surrounding area.
A subsequent search of the scene led to the recovery of two mobile phones and the sum of ₦14,000, believed to have been abandoned by the fleeing suspects. The intercepted cattle were relocated to a safe location for further necessary action.
Military sources said clearance operations and domination patrols have continued across the area to prevent further attacks, deny criminal elements freedom of movement, and sustain peace in Plateau State.
The latest operations underscore the commitment of Operation Enduring Peace to tackling insecurity, disrupting criminal activities, and protecting lives and property through intelligence-driven operations across the state.
