The Nigerian Navy has intensified its crackdown on the illegal exploitation of natural resources with the arrest of 13 suspects and the interception of two wooden boats conveying suspected illegally mined black sand in Bayelsa State.
The operation was carried out by personnel of Forward Operating Base (FOB) FORMOSO following credible intelligence on the movement of boats allegedly involved in illegal mining activities within coastal communities of Brass Local Government Area.
According to the Nigerian Navy, the suspects were apprehended after naval operatives intercepted the boats at Lekeson and Liama communities, where large quantities of suspected illegally mined black sand were discovered onboard.
A total of 13 crew members were arrested in connection with the illegal activity.
The Navy described the operation as part of its sustained efforts to combat the unlawful exploitation of the nation’s natural resources and protect the maritime environment from activities that threaten economic development and environmental sustainability.
It noted that illegal extraction of mineral resources not only deprives the nation of revenue but also poses significant environmental risks to affected communities and ecosystems.
In line with existing procedures and directives of the Bayelsa State Government, the two wooden boats, the recovered black sand and the 13 suspects were handed over to the Divisional Police Officer of Nembe Division for further investigation and possible prosecution.
The Nigerian Navy reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining operations against illegal mining, crude oil theft and other maritime crimes across the country’s waterways.
The Service also pledged continued collaboration with relevant government agencies and stakeholders to safeguard Nigeria’s maritime resources and ensure a secure environment for legitimate economic activities.
The latest operation highlights the Navy’s ongoing resolve to strengthen maritime security and prevent criminal elements from exploiting the nation’s coastal and inland waterways.
