The Nigerian Army has renovated and commissioned the headquarters of the 81 Battalion and the official residence of its Commanding Officer at Letmauck Cantonment, Mokola Barracks, Ibadan, as part of efforts to enhance troops' welfare and operational effectiveness.

Commissioning the projects on Wednesday, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 2 Division Nigerian Army, Major General Chinedu Nnebeife, said the initiative aligns with the command philosophy of the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, particularly the "Soldiers First" policy aimed at improving the welfare of personnel and their families.

Nnebeife described the projects as strategic investments that would boost operational efficiency, combat readiness and administrative effectiveness within the battalion.

According to him, the renovated battalion headquarters will strengthen command and administrative functions, while the upgraded official residence will provide improved comfort and welfare for the Commanding Officer and his family.

The GOC commended the Chief of Army Staff for sustaining welfare-focused interventions across Army formations and praised the outgoing Commanding Officer of the battalion, Lieutenant Colonel Emmanuel Agaku, for initiating and successfully completing the projects.

Earlier, Agaku explained that the renovation followed an assessment of facilities within the barracks shortly after he assumed command in February 2025, which revealed the need to rehabilitate critical infrastructure.

He said the project was driven by the Army's welfare philosophy, noting that a motivated soldier remains a productive soldier.

The battalion headquarters underwent extensive rehabilitation, including reroofing, electrical and plumbing upgrades, office reconfiguration, installation of modern fittings, painting and environmental improvements.

Project Supervisor and Adjutant of 81 Battalion, Captain Femi Ajia, said the renovation was executed through meticulous planning and strict adherence to quality standards to improve personnel welfare and administrative efficiency.

The upgraded headquarters now features 12 offices, a conference room, furnished workstations, air conditioners, refrigerators and a newly constructed car park, while the Commanding Officer's residence was enhanced with improved security infrastructure, perimeter fencing, a gatehouse, paved driveways, guest facilities and other modern amenities.

Senior military officers, commanders of affiliated formations, personnel of 81 Battalion, family members and invited guests attended the commissioning ceremony.
