The Nigerian Army has commissioned a newly constructed health centre in Ikot Andem Itam, Itu Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, as part of the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Special Intervention Project aimed at improving access to healthcare and strengthening civil-military relations.
The project was formally inaugurated on June 4 by the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, represented by the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 6 Division, Maj.-Gen. E.E. Emekah.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Army leadership reaffirmed its commitment to supporting community development initiatives that improve the welfare of citizens while fostering stronger ties between the military and host communities.
The health facility was facilitated by the Commandant of the Nigerian Army School of Military Engineering (NASME), Maj.-Gen. I.E. Ekpenyong, as part of efforts to provide sustainable and impactful infrastructure to communities.
Military sources said the project was designed to enhance healthcare delivery for residents of Ikot Andem Itam and neighbouring communities by improving access to basic medical services.
The commissioning ceremony attracted a wide range of stakeholders, including serving and retired senior military officers, representatives of the Akwa Ibom State Government, traditional rulers, members of the Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association (NAOWA), community leaders and other invited guests.
Speakers at the event commended the Nigerian Army for extending its developmental interventions beyond its core security responsibilities and contributing to the socio-economic well-being of local communities.
Community representatives expressed appreciation for the project, noting that the new health centre would significantly improve healthcare access and service delivery for residents of the area.
The event was conducted peacefully and concluded without any security incident.
The COAS Special Intervention Project is one of several non-kinetic initiatives through which the Nigerian Army seeks to support national development, promote community engagement and strengthen cooperation between the military and the civilian population.
