The ongoing counter-insurgency campaign in Nigeria’s North-East has continued to record significant gains as troops of Operation HADIN KAI intensify efforts to dismantle the logistics and support networks sustaining terrorist activities in the region.
In a carefully coordinated intelligence-led operation, troops of the 222 Battalion (Mechanised) arrested a suspected logistics supplier for the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) alongside an alleged accomplice in Konduga Local Government Area of Borno State.
The operation was the culmination of sustained intelligence gathering, including communication intercepts and surveillance targeting suspected terrorist logistics networks operating within the area. Acting on credible intelligence, troops launched a covert operation at approximately 10:00 p.m. on June 26 in Malari village, where the primary suspect, identified as Abdullahi Hamza, was apprehended while allegedly attempting to deliver supplies to ISWAP fighters.
Items recovered from the suspect included a loaf of bread, two bottles of soft drinks, and a pack of sewing needles with thread. While seemingly ordinary, military investigators believe the items were intended to support insurgent elements operating within the theatre of operations, highlighting the often inconspicuous methods employed by terrorist logistics networks.
Preliminary interrogation reportedly revealed that the suspect was en route to meet an ISWAP member whose telephone number had earlier been identified through intelligence intercepts. This breakthrough enabled security forces to expand the investigation, leading to the arrest of a second suspect, Haruna Abubakar, a member of a local vigilante group in Maiduguri, who is alleged to have served as an accomplice in facilitating terrorist logistics.
Both suspects have since been handed over to military intelligence authorities for detailed investigation, profiling, and further exploitation of intelligence that could assist in identifying additional members of the support network.
Military sources described the operation as another demonstration of the growing effectiveness of intelligence-driven operations in disrupting terrorist logistics chains, which remain critical to the operational capability of insurgent groups.
Security analysts have consistently maintained that weakening terrorist logistics and support structures is as important as direct combat operations. By targeting suppliers, couriers, informants, and facilitators, security forces reduce insurgents’ ability to sustain operations, replenish essential supplies, and maintain communication within their networks.
The latest arrests underscore the evolving operational strategy of Operation HADIN KAI, which combines precision intelligence, surveillance, and covert operations to identify and neutralise individuals providing material support to terrorist organisations.
Military authorities have reiterated their commitment to sustaining intelligence exploitation, surveillance, and targeted operations across the North-East to dismantle terrorist support networks and deny insurgent groups the resources required to continue their activities.
