The Abia State Police Command has arrested a 37-year-old man, Agwu Ukpo, who was captured in a viral video allegedly assaulting a woman identified as Amarachi Chiyere during a dispute over a pot of soup.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chioma Chinaka, disclosed in a statement that the suspect, a native of Akanu Ohafia in Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State, was apprehended by operatives of the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) following actionable intelligence.
According to the police, the incident, which sparked outrage on social media after the video surfaced online, is currently under investigation at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID).
DSP Chinaka stated that the suspect would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations and could face charges bordering on assault and attempted murder.
The Police Command strongly condemned the attack, describing it as a barbaric and inhumane act of domestic violence.
“The Abia State Police Command once again strongly condemns this barbaric and inhumane act of domestic violence and reiterates the fact that such behaviour is unacceptable under any circumstances,” the statement read.
The Command urged members of the public to shun all forms of violence, assuring residents of its commitment to ensuring justice for victims and bringing perpetrators of crime to account.
Police further reiterated that anyone found engaging in acts of violence would face the full weight of the law.
