Troops of Sector 1, Joint Task Force South East, Operation UDO KA, in collaboration with other security agencies, have foiled an attack by suspected members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), during an intelligence-led patrol in Imezi Owa community, Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu State.

According to a statement issued by Lieutenant Colonel Olabisi Olalekan Ayeni, Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 82 Division Nigerian Army, the operation was carried out on 6 May 2026 as part of ongoing efforts to track terrorist collaborators within the community.

The statement explained that while troops were advancing on foot into the area, they came under attack from a building suspected to be a terrorist hideout. Three military personnel sustained injuries during the encounter.

Despite the attack, the troops reportedly maintained operational superiority, repelled the assault, and secured the area. The injured personnel were immediately evacuated and are currently receiving treatment at a military medical facility.

During the exchange of gunfire, Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) allegedly stored inside the terrorists’ hideout detonated, sparking a fire outbreak that destroyed the building.

Troops subsequently conducted exploitation operations around the area and recovered additional IEDs, improvised hand grenades, as well as a shrine allegedly used for ritual activities by the criminal elements. The shrine was later destroyed to prevent its continued use for unlawful activities.

Security forces also apprehended one suspected collaborator during the operation. The suspect and recovered items have since been handed over to the Nigerian Police, Ezeagu Division, for further investigation.

The Joint Task Force reassured residents of Imezi Owa and surrounding communities of its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, while urging law-abiding citizens to remain vigilant, avoid harbouring criminal elements, and continue cooperating with security agencies.

Operation UDO KA also warned members and sympathisers of the proscribed IPOB/ESN group to desist from criminal activities or face decisive military action, stressing that security forces remain determined to dismantle criminal networks and restore lasting peace across the South-East region.
