Troops of the Nigerian Army have recorded a significant breakthrough in ongoing counter-terrorism and anti-banditry operations, rescuing 21 kidnapped victims and dismantling multiple criminal enclaves during a coordinated forest clearance mission in Plateau State.
The precision operation, conducted in the early hours of April 9, targeted bandits’ strongholds within the Daji Madam Forest—an area long identified as a strategic sanctuary for armed groups operating across Plateau and neighbouring states.
Security sources confirmed that troops of the 33 Artillery Brigade, under the leadership of Brigadier General S.S. Shehu, executed the offensive in close coordination with operatives from the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA). The operation focused on high-value locations including Dogo Ruwa and Bogwas, where intelligence reports had indicated entrenched bandit activity.
In a well-synchronized maneuver, elements of a Combat Support Infantry Battalion stationed at Mansur, led by Lieutenant Colonel J.T. Bere, established blocking positions alongside Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) personnel. This tactical move effectively cut off escape routes, trapping fleeing insurgents within the forest perimeter.
Troops made decisive contact with the armed elements, overwhelming resistance and successfully clearing several camps, including a key enclave linked to a notorious bandit leader known as Auta Kachalla. The encounter led to the destruction of multiple motorcycles used by the criminals for mobility and rapid raids.
Recovered items from the cleared camps include a G3 rifle, four magazines, three generating sets, and a solar panel—further evidence of the level of logistics and semi-permanent structures maintained by the group.
All 21 rescued victims are currently undergoing medical evaluation and debriefing procedures, with arrangements underway for their safe reunion with families.
Military sources indicate that follow-up offensive operations are ongoing to neutralize residual threats and consolidate gains in the area.
The latest success underscores the Nigerian military’s intensified campaign to dismantle criminal networks embedded within forested enclaves, as part of broader efforts to restore security and stability across Plateau State and the wider North-Central region.
