The Oyo State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a suspect in connection with alleged cyberbullying, defamation of character, and threats to life involving a popular entertainer.
In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, the Command said it launched an investigation following a formal petition submitted to the office of the Commissioner of Police.
According to the statement, the petition alleged that Adebisi Taye Akande, popularly known as Taye Currency, was subjected to sustained cyberbullying and defamatory attacks across multiple social media platforms by Afunso Ridwan Abiola.
Police said the complainant further alleged that he had previously provided financial assistance of ₦800,000 to the suspect to support his music career, but the suspect later made disparaging remarks capable of damaging his reputation.
The allegations were said to have escalated after the suspect reportedly made additional defamatory comments during a public programme known as Agbaletu, which later circulated widely on social media.
Following what the Command described as “diligent investigation and technical intelligence,” operatives tracked and arrested the suspect in Lagos State. He is currently in police custody and undergoing further investigation.
The Command also dismissed reports circulating online that the suspect was being unlawfully detained by the Anti-Cultism Unit, describing such claims as false and misleading.
“The suspect is being held in lawful custody, and all procedures strictly comply with extant laws and established protocols,” the statement noted.
The Commissioner of Police in Oyo State, Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to due process, fairness, and the protection of fundamental rights.
He urged members of the public to remain law-abiding and disregard unverified reports, assuring that justice would take its full course.
The police further called on media organisations to prioritise responsible journalism by verifying information before publication.
