The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Adewale Adeniyi, has been conferred with a Fellowship Award by the Nigerian Institute of Journalism (NIJ), in recognition of his distinguished career and contributions to national development.
The honour was bestowed during a special convocation ceremony held on Wednesday, April 15, 2026. Speaking at the event, Adeniyi described the recognition as both personally meaningful and professionally significant, reflecting on the foundational values instilled in him during his time at the institute.
According to him, the NIJ shaped his commitment to professionalism, discipline, and continuous self-development—principles he noted have guided his career trajectory.
He further emphasized that the award is not only a personal milestone but also a recognition of the Nigeria Customs Service, noting that dedicated service to the nation does not go unnoticed.
As part of his commitment to the institution, Adeniyi announced plans to support the development of a modern multimedia and resource centre at the institute. He explained that the proposed facility, which will be constructed following a needs assessment, will feature a radio station, editing and production suites, and integrated multimedia infrastructure to enhance hands-on training for students.
Chairman of the NIJ Governing Council, Olusegun Osoba, described the conferment as historic, noting that it received the approval of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He added that Adeniyi is the first alumnus of the institute to be awarded the fellowship, an honour reserved for individuals who have demonstrated exceptional achievement in their respective fields.
In the same vein, the Provost of NIJ, Gbenga Adefaye, stated that the award underscores the institution’s enduring values of discipline, ethical responsibility, and intellectual rigour. He noted that Adeniyi’s career exemplifies how these principles can translate into impactful leadership beyond the field of journalism.
