The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, on Monday decorated eight newly promoted Deputy Inspectors-General of Police (DIGs), charging them to strengthen institutional reforms, discipline and professionalism within the Nigeria Police Force.
Speaking during the decoration ceremony held on March 9, 2026, the IGP described the elevation of the officers as recognition of decades of dedication, professional excellence and commitment to policing in Nigeria.
Disu said the ceremony represented more than the adornment of new insignia, noting that it symbolised the assumption of greater leadership responsibilities in the strategic management of the Police Force.
According to him, promotion to the rank of Deputy Inspector-General of Police remains one of the highest levels of professional trust within the institution and demands wisdom, integrity, courage and commitment to justice.
The officers decorated at the ceremony include DIG Zachariah Fera Achinyan, DIG Zango Ibrahim Baba, DIG Isyaku Mohammed, DIG Margaret Agebe Challa, DIG Mohammed Abdul Sulaiman, DIG Kenechukwu Onwuemelie, DIG Fayoade Adegoke Mustapha and DIG Umar Shehu Nadada.
The police boss urged the newly promoted senior officers to provide strong institutional direction and help strengthen internal discipline while driving reforms aimed at repositioning the Force.
He noted that the country’s security environment continues to evolve in complexity, with challenges ranging from organised crime and cyber-enabled threats to violent criminal networks.
The IGP therefore tasked the DIGs to deploy their experience in strengthening intelligence-led policing, deepening inter-agency cooperation and improving operational coordination across commands.
He also emphasised the need for accountability within the ranks, noting that their leadership must inspire confidence within the Force and build public trust among citizens.
Disu further said the Nigeria Police Force was committed to becoming a more professional, technologically driven and citizen-focused institution, stressing that the roles of the Deputy Inspectors-General would be critical to achieving that transformation.
The IGP expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his continued support toward strengthening the capacity of the Police Force in enhancing national security.
He also commended the Police Service Commission for its partnership and commitment to transparency and professionalism in the promotion process within the Force.
Congratulating the newly decorated DIGs, Disu urged them to see their elevation not only as recognition of past service but as a renewed call to national duty.
He encouraged them to lead with honour, uphold professionalism, accountability and discipline, and contribute to building a police institution that is respected, trusted and capable of meeting Nigeria’s security needs.
