President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced the establishment of a special Armed Forces Welfare Fund, pledging all salaries earned since assuming office as seed capital for the initiative in honour of his 74th birthday.
The President made the announcement on Saturday in a move aimed at strengthening support for Nigeria’s military personnel, wounded soldiers, and the families of fallen heroes.
In a personal statement marking his birthday, Tinubu, who is also the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, paid glowing tribute to military personnel, describing them as “valiant men and women” who continue to make immense sacrifices to defend the nation.
“On this my 74th birthday, I celebrate the valiant men and women of our Armed Forces,” the President stated.
Fund to Support Troops, Wounded Soldiers, Families of Fallen Heroes
According to the directive, President Tinubu has instructed the Accountant-General of the Federation to immediately create a dedicated account for the Armed Forces Welfare Fund.
The fund is expected to provide targeted support for:
• Serving military personnel
• Soldiers wounded in the line of duty
• Families of fallen heroes, including widows, widowers, and children
It will also cater specifically to personnel who have suffered life-altering injuries, including amputations, as well as dependants of officers and soldiers who died in active service.
Tinubu’s Salaries to Serve as Seed Funding
The President disclosed that all salaries accrued since he assumed office will be paid into the fund as the initial contribution.
He noted that the donation is separate from existing military welfare packages and insurance schemes already provided by the government.
Calls for Nationwide Support
Tinubu also appealed to governors, lawmakers, private sector leaders, friends, and well-meaning Nigerians to support the initiative financially once the account details are officially released.
“I call on our Governors, members of the National Assembly, the private sector, my friends and all well-wishers to support this initiative. Details of the account will be made available in due course,” he said.

Emphasising the spirit behind the intervention, the President said supporting members of the Armed Forces and their families should be seen as a national responsibility rather than an act of charity.
“We must never forget those who stand in harm’s way for our peace, nor the sacrifices borne by their families. This is not charity. It is duty. And we will fulfil it.”
Further details on the management of the welfare fund and contribution guidelines are expected to be released by relevant government authorities in the coming days.
