The Nigerian Navy Ship Jubilee (NNS Jubilee) has handed over nine suspected oil thieves to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) following their arrest for alleged involvement in illegal bunkering activities offshore Akwa Ibom State.
The suspects were apprehended on 23 February 2026 at Asabo Field during a joint operation conducted by NNS Jubilee in collaboration with NNS Bonny and NNS Shiroro. Speaking during a press briefing, the Commander, NNS Jubilee, Commodore Mohammed Abubakar Manga, said the operation underscores the Navy’s sustained commitment to tackling maritime crimes, including crude oil theft and illegal bunkering, in Nigeria’s territorial waters.
He explained that the arrest followed credible intelligence and coordinated patrol efforts, noting that the Nigerian Navy remains resolute in protecting the nation’s maritime assets and economic interests.
Commodore Manga also highlighted the importance of inter-agency collaboration, stressing that the suspects and exhibits were formally handed over to the EFCC on Wednesday, 25 February 2026, for further investigation and prosecution.
He warned individuals involved in criminal activities within the maritime domain to desist, assuring that the Nigerian Navy will continue to intensify surveillance and intelligence-driven operations in line with the directives of the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas.
The Navy reiterated its commitment to working with relevant stakeholders to curb oil theft, safeguard national revenue, and ensure the security of Nigeria’s maritime environment.
