The Headquarters 82 Division, Nigerian Army has commended traders at Onitsha Main Market for reopening their businesses, describing the move as a courageous and patriotic stand against intimidation by criminal elements.
In a press statement issued by Lieutenant Colonel Olabisi Olalekan Ayeni, Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, the Division praised the traders for resuming commercial activities after years of disruption caused by threats from criminal groups posing as freedom fighters. According to the statement, the decision to reopen reflects resilience, confidence in security agencies, and a collective commitment to peace, security, and economic progress in Anambra State and the wider South-East.
The Army noted that for years, these criminal elements sought to instill fear, cripple commerce, destabilize communities, and erode trust in government institutions. It stressed that such actions have been largely neutralized through sustained security operations, while the traders’ resolve has further validated the progress made by security agencies.
The 82 Division assured traders and other stakeholders that Onitsha Main Market and all economic centres across the region will continue to enjoy robust protection. Troops remain fully deployed and on high alert, while intelligence-led kinetic operations are ongoing to dismantle the remnants of Indigenous People of Biafra and the Eastern Security Network. The safety of lives and property of law-abiding citizens, the statement emphasized, remains a top priority.
Residents were urged to go about their lawful activities without fear, shun intimidation, and remain courageous in the face of what the Army described as “empty threats.” Criminal elements were warned to lay down their arms, renounce violence, and embrace peace, as unrepentant offenders would face the full weight of the law with no hiding place from justice.
The Division reiterated its unwavering commitment to protecting citizens, securing lives and property, and defending Nigeria’s sovereignty. Members of the public were also encouraged to provide credible information on security threats to aid prompt response, as collective vigilance remains key to defeating terrorism.
Meanwhile, the General Officer Commanding 82 Division and Commander Joint Task Force South-East, Operation UDO KA, Major General Oluremi Fadairo, commended the political will and support of the Anambra State Government. He noted that the collaboration between the state government and security agencies has been instrumental in ongoing efforts to end terrorism, restore normalcy, and create an enabling environment for commerce to thrive.
