Nigeria has been described as a stabilising force in the West African region, with the Nigerian Armed Forces—particularly the Nigerian Air Force—playing a critical role in counter-insurgency and regional security operations.
This assertion was made by the Polish Ambassador to Nigeria, Michał Cygan, during an official courtesy visit to the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Sunday Kelvin Aneke, at the Headquarters of the Nigerian Air Force in Abuja on 13 January 2026.
In a statement issued by the Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, the Ambassador commended the professionalism and resilience of the Nigerian Armed Forces, noting that Nigeria’s strategic position and sustained security engagements continue to contribute significantly to peace and stability across the region. He also expressed Poland’s interest in exploring practical avenues of bilateral defence cooperation to support Nigeria’s security priorities.
Responding, Air Marshal Aneke emphasised the importance of strategic international partnerships in addressing contemporary and asymmetric security challenges. He reaffirmed the Nigerian Air Force’s commitment to leveraging cooperation with friendly nations to enhance operational effectiveness, capacity development, and information sharing in support of national security objectives.
Discussions during the visit focused on strengthening bilateral defence cooperation, particularly in areas that would support and project the Nigerian Air Force’s ongoing counter-insurgency operations nationwide.
The meeting underscored the value of defence diplomacy in fostering mutual understanding, enhancing operational collaboration, and deepening bilateral relations between Nigeria and Poland, while reaffirming the Nigerian Air Force’s commitment to professionalism, partnership, and sustained engagement in support of regional and global security.
