Investigators probing an alleged coup plot against the administration of President Bola Tinubu have uncovered evidence suggesting that the suspects procured 32 Gulf and SUV vehicles to support covert operations across strategic locations in the country, according to a report by Premium Times.
Security sources with direct knowledge of the investigation disclosed that military investigators recovered documentary evidence linking key suspects to the acquisition of the vehicles. The documents reportedly include receipts and transaction trails, which now form part of the body of evidence being compiled by authorities.
According to the sources, the vehicles were allegedly intended to disguise movements, facilitate intelligence gathering, and enable discreet access to sensitive locations, including airports and other public facilities. The cars were reportedly deployed to move operatives without attracting attention and to conduct reconnaissance linked to the alleged coup plot.
“These records detail how the vehicles and other logistics were financed and distributed among the operatives,” one source familiar with the investigation said.
Investigators have also reportedly identified a retired major general, identified simply as Adamu, as a key figure connected to the network. Security sources said the retired officer evaded arrest, while three other suspects linked to the plot are currently at large.
Intelligence officials further disclosed that one of the fleeing suspects has been tracked to a country in South America, although his exact location has not been officially revealed for security reasons.
Multiple security agencies are said to be working jointly to dismantle remaining cells associated with the alleged plot, with surveillance operations and cross-border intelligence coordination ongoing.
Meanwhile, preparations for prosecution are advancing. Sources within the defence and security establishment revealed that authorities are awaiting presidential approval to formally constitute a court-martial panel to try the implicated military personnel. At least 25 military officers and personnel are expected to face trial in connection with the alleged coup attempt.
In addition, an unspecified number of civilians are reportedly in custody and under investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the State Security Service for their alleged roles in financing, logistics, and coordination.
Security officials said further arrests are likely as investigations continue, with more details expected to emerge regarding the structure, funding channels, and operational planning behind the failed plot.
