The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has announced the resumption of enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit policy with effect from January 2, 2026, citing rising security concerns and the need to enhance public safety across the country.
In a press statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the Police clarified that there was never a court order restraining the Force from enforcing the existing law regulating the use of tinted glass on vehicles. He explained that enforcement was earlier suspended voluntarily to allow motorists sufficient time to regularise their documents and complete the permit registration process without undue pressure.
According to the statement, recent security assessments have revealed an alarming increase in criminal activities carried out using vehicles fitted with unauthorised tinted glass. Criminal elements, including organised groups, have reportedly exploited such vehicles to conceal their identities while committing offences such as armed robbery, kidnapping, and other violent crimes.
“In view of these developments, the Nigeria Police Force considers it both necessary and urgent to resume full enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit policy as a proactive measure to safeguard lives and property,” the statement read.
The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, PhD, NPM, assured members of the public that the renewed enforcement would be carried out with utmost professionalism, respect for citizens’ rights, and strict adherence to extant laws. He reiterated the Force’s commitment to promoting public safety, upholding the rule of law, and working collaboratively with stakeholders to keep Nigeria secure.
The Police also advised motorists who require tinted glass permits to apply through approved channels and ensure full compliance with all legal requirements before the commencement date.
The Force urged the general public to cooperate with law enforcement officers, noting that the measure is aimed solely at enhancing national security and protecting all road users.
