A tragic incident unfolded on Thursday in Oke-Ala, Oba-Ile, Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State, when a personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) was stabbed to death by a mentally unstable youth during an attempt to restrain him.

The situation reportedly began after the suspect’s mother invited two NSCDC operatives to help control her son, whom residents described as mentally unstable for several years and increasingly disruptive to the peace of the neighbourhood. Responding to the call for assistance, the operatives arrived with the intention of preventing further disturbance and ensuring the safety of both the young man and the community.

According to eyewitnesses, the confrontation turned violent when the operatives attempted to restrain the suspect with chains. In the struggle that followed, the youth allegedly overpowered one of the officers, seized his knife, and stabbed him multiple times. “The boy suddenly became violent. He struggled with the officer, took his knife, and stabbed him several times,” an eyewitness who preferred anonymity recounted, expressing shock that the armed officer could not stop the attack.

The critically injured officer was rushed to a nearby hospital but was confirmed dead shortly after arrival due to the severity of his wounds.

Confirming the incident, the Public Relations Officer of the NSCDC in Ondo State, DSC Daniel Aidamenbor, described the attack as a painful loss. He explained that the operatives were attempting to restrain the suspect with the aim of taking him to a psychiatric facility for proper evaluation and treatment when the tragedy occurred. He emphasized that the officers acted with the best intentions for both the suspect and the community.

As of the time of filing this report, detailed information surrounding the circumstances of the attack remains limited. Meanwhile, efforts are ongoing to secure the suspect for medical assessment and to facilitate further investigation into the incident.
