Nigeria has unveiled a major diplomatic initiative aimed at reinforcing democratic governance across West Africa. The country’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Yusuf Tuggar, on Monday launched the Regional Partnership for Democracy (RPD)—a home-grown framework designed to promote democracy, stability, and sustainable development anchored on African values and local realities.
Speaking during the launch in Abuja, Minister Tuggar stressed the importance of African ownership in shaping and sustaining democratic systems.
“Democracy flourishes most sustainably when it is rooted in African values and attuned to local peculiarities, whilst drawing judiciously from global best practices,” he said.
The RPD is open to all West African countries and aligns with the African Union’s Agenda 2063 as well as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 16, which promotes peace, justice, and strong institutions.
Key focus areas include; Strengthening electoral management bodies, Enhancing youth and civil society engagement, Combating disinformation and misinformation, and Supporting good governance and institutional reforms
Under the arrangement, the RPD Secretariat will operate from Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, while its technical team will be hosted by the Office of the UN Resident Coordinator in Abuja.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has endorsed the initiative, describing it as “Nigeria’s gift to the strengthening and flourishing of democracy in Africa.”
Sierra Leone’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Amb. Julius F. Sandy, delivered a goodwill message calling on Nigeria to fully embrace its leadership role on the continent.
“I believe, and fervently so, that when Nigeria succeeds, West Africa, nay Africa will succeed,” he said, expressing confidence in Nigeria’s capacity to drive democratic and developmental progress across the region. He also commended the partnership between Nigeria’s Foreign Ministry and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) as a key pillar of the initiative.
Also speaking at the event, Ambassador Sola Enikanolaye, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs & International Relations, reaffirmed President Tinubu’s strong commitment to the project.
“The President’s backing is unequivocal, and we will continue to drive this agenda forward with renewed vigor and dedication,” he noted, urging all stakeholders—governments, civil society, and development partners—to support the initiative.
The launch of the RPD marks a significant step in regional efforts to strengthen democratic governance amid rising concerns over military coups, electoral disputes, and governance challenges in parts of West Africa.
Observers say the initiative signals Nigeria’s readiness to reclaim its leadership role on the continent and champion a stable, democratic, and prosperous West Africa.
The RPD is expected to begin implementation phases in the coming months, with consultations and collaborative engagements planned across the region.
