The Naval Officers’ Wives Association (NOWA) on Monday, 3 November 2025, held a colourful handing and taking over ceremony at its National Secretariat in Abuja, where Hajiya Aisha Abbas officially assumed office as the 23rd National President of the Association.
In her inaugural remarks, Hajiya Abbas expressed gratitude to Almighty God for the opportunity to lead the Association, pledging to consolidate on the gains recorded under her predecessor, Mrs. Ijeoma Blessing Ogalla. She lauded Mrs. Ogalla’s exemplary leadership and dedication, describing her tenure as one that propelled NOWA to “unprecedented heights.”
The new President, who is the wife of the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, emphasized her commitment to promoting the welfare and empowerment of naval families, while expanding the Association’s outreach to the wider community.
“As we embark on this new journey together, we will champion initiatives that empower and uplift our members, enhance their skills, and promote their well-being,” she said. “Above all, we will continue to foster unity, friendship, and a strong sense of belonging.”
Hajiya Abbas also underscored the importance of community engagement and social responsibility, stating that NOWA would strengthen its social impact through education, healthcare, and sustainable development projects. She urged members to remain united and contribute actively to the Association’s growth, noting that its success depends on the collective effort of all members.
“United in purpose, we can achieve greatness and leave a lasting legacy for generations to come,” she added.
In her valedictory speech, the outgoing Vice President, Ambassador (Dr.) Mrs. Zainab Akpan, expressed deep appreciation to God and to all members for their cooperation and dedication throughout her tenure. She reflected on the achievements of the 22nd Executive Committee, which she described as “a journey of service, unity, and empowerment” that significantly impacted naval families and host communities.
Mrs. Akpan commended the newly inaugurated President for her leadership qualities and pledged full support to her administration.
“I am confident that your leadership, guided by wisdom, compassion, and vision, will steer this Association to even greater heights,” she stated.

She also used the occasion to express gratitude to the immediate past Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla (Rtd), for his steadfast support, and to key executives including Mrs. Abimbola Izu for her financial guidance and Mrs. Aniema Iyalla for her exceptional contribution to the growth of NOWA educational institutions.
The event, attended by members of the Naval community and other dignitaries, marked a smooth transition of leadership and reaffirmed NOWA’s commitment to fostering unity, welfare, and national development through service and compassion.
