The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has announced the disbursement of cheques worth ₦2,171,124,041.87 to 1,574 beneficiaries under the Group Life Assurance and IGP Family Welfare Schemes.
Speaking during a solemn ceremony held on Tuesday, September 24, 2025, at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, IGP Egbetokun said the payment covers policy years from 2015 to 2025, including long-overdue claims that had been pending for nearly a decade.
According to the IGP, these recoveries were made possible through persistent engagement with insurance companies to ensure that justice was finally served for the families who had been waiting for so long.
“This ceremony is not just another official function,” Egbetokun said. “It is a solemn duty of remembrance and responsibility — a demonstration that the Nigeria Police Force does not abandon its own. Behind every badge is a family that bears the weight of sacrifice, and we will never forget them.”
Since assuming office as the 22nd Inspector-General of Police, Egbetokun disclosed that this event marked the 11th phase of the welfare disbursement exercise. Over this period, a total of ₦24.2 billion has been paid to 9,735 families of deceased officers across the country.
While acknowledging that no monetary sum could replace the loss of a loved one, he described the payments as a “symbol of collective gratitude” and a commitment to continue standing by the families of fallen heroes.
The IGP also pledged comprehensive reforms to strengthen the Police welfare system, including digitizing processes to ensure prompt payment of entitlements and prevent unnecessary delays.
“Welfare is not a footnote in our agenda; it is the heartbeat of our reforms,” he said. “We are building a system that is transparent, responsive, and fair, so that no family of a deceased officer is ever left unattended or forgotten.”
Egbetokun commended the Force Insurance Unit for its diligence and the insurance companies for fulfilling their obligations, while urging them to remain steadfast in promptly processing future claims.
He also expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for his unwavering support of police welfare initiatives, as well as the Ministry of Police Affairs for its guidance.
The event ended on a reflective note as the IGP paid tribute to the sacrifices of the fallen officers.
“Every name we honour today represents a life laid down for the peace and security of our nation. May their souls rest in peace, and may their sacrifice inspire us all to serve with greater courage and integrity,” he said.
He reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to supporting the families of officers who died in the line of duty.
The families present at the ceremony expressed relief and appreciation, describing the payments as a long-awaited gesture of care and recognition for their loved ones’ service to the nation.
