The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially announced the commencement of electioneering campaigns for the 2026 Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections.
In a statement issued by the National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun (mni), political parties participating in the elections are now permitted to begin campaigns in public from Wednesday, September 24, 2025, and end at midnight on Thursday, February 19, 2026, in line with Section 94(1) of the Electoral Act 2022 and item 8 of the commission’s timetable and schedule of activities.
Olumekun reminded political parties, candidates, and their supporters that their campaigns must comply with the law. He emphasized that Sections 92 and 93 of the Electoral Act 2022 strictly prohibit the use of abusive language, hate speech, physical attacks, and the destruction of campaign materials during rallies, processions, and meetings.
“Similarly, all parties and candidates must be granted unimpeded access to public facilities for media campaigns, outdoor advertising, rallies, and meetings,” the statement read.
INEC also cautioned against the misuse of state resources, reiterating that Section 95(2) of the Electoral Act prohibits the use of incumbency to give undue advantage or disadvantage to any political party or candidate.
The FCT Area Council elections are scheduled to hold on Saturday, February 21, 2026.
Olumekun urged all stakeholders to conduct their campaigns peacefully and in accordance with the law to ensure credible and violence-free elections.
