The Anambra State Police Command has swiftly moved to restore calm following a violent attack by suspected cultists at a burial ceremony in Ezi Village, Ogidi, Idemili North Local Government Area, late on Thursday, September 11, 2025.
According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, armed men believed to be members of rival cult groups stormed the event and opened fire on attendees. The brutal attack left four persons dead and fifteen others seriously injured.
Responding to a distress call, operatives from Ogidi Division, led by the Divisional Police Officer, immediately mobilized to the scene. They successfully restored order and evacuated the injured victims to nearby hospitals for urgent medical care. During the operation, 16 expended cartridges were recovered as evidence.
Preliminary investigations by the Command indicate that the incident was a result of a clash between rival cult groups. SP Ikenga assured that a discreet investigation is underway to identify, trace, and bring the perpetrators to justice.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, fwc MNIPS, PhD, condemned the attack in strong terms and reiterated the Command’s commitment to eradicating cult-related violence and other forms of criminality in the state.
“We urge residents to remain calm, vigilant, and security-conscious while continuing to support the police with credible information that can help prevent crime,” the statement read.
The police also encouraged members of the public to report any suspicious movements or persons to the nearest police station as investigations continue
