The Federal Republic of Nigeria has extended heartfelt congratulations to the Government and people of the Republic of Jamaica on the occasion of the country’s 61st Independence Anniversary.

In a goodwill message conveyed by Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, to his Jamaican counterpart, Her Excellency Kamina Johnson Smith, Nigeria hailed the enduring friendship between the two nations and reaffirmed its commitment to further strengthening bilateral ties.

In a statement issued by Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Tuggar praised the historical and cultural bonds shared by Nigeria and Jamaica, noting that both nations are united by a rich common heritage and a shared commitment to the advancement of the African diaspora.

“Nigeria and Jamaica continue to enjoy strong bonds of friendship, mutual respect, and fruitful cooperation,” the statement read.

Nigeria also commended Jamaica’s remarkable achievements in governance, culture, education, sports, and sustainable development—accomplishments that have earned the Caribbean nation admiration across the globe, particularly in Africa.

Looking ahead, Nigeria expressed readiness to deepen cooperation with Jamaica in critical sectors such as trade, education, tourism, sports, and cultural exchange for the mutual benefit of their citizens.

“As Jamaica marks this auspicious occasion, Nigeria joins in the spirit of unity, pride, and celebration,” the statement added. “We look forward to strengthening collaboration in regional and international fora, including the Commonwealth and the United Nations, in pursuit of shared goals of peace, prosperity, and sustainable development.”

Jamaica gained independence from the United Kingdom on August 6, 1962.
