... Seek Retraction, Public Apology Over ‘Misogynistic Remarks’
Female officers of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) have expressed outrage over what they described as “unwarranted and malicious attacks” on some of their colleagues recently promoted by the Police Service Commission (PSC) following recommendations from the Inspector-General of Police (IGP).
In a statement issued by the Force Gender Advisor to the IGP, Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) Aishatu Abubakar Baju, the officers condemned remarks allegedly led by rights activist Mr. Omoyele Sowore and his associates, which they said singled out female promotees for criticism while ignoring their male counterparts promoted under the same process.
“It is particularly disturbing that these malicious statements singled out female officers for attack, leaving their male colleagues unscathed,” AIG Baju said.
She stressed that female police officers are an integral part of national security, serving with “professionalism, dedication, and sacrifice” while also fulfilling roles as mothers, sisters, and wives. She insisted that promotions in the NPF are strictly based on merit — whether through years of exemplary service or outstanding performance — and that women who meet these criteria are entitled to career advancement just as much as men.
Describing the insinuation that the promotions were unearned or gender-biased as “unfounded and misogynistic,” Baju warned that such comments undermine the sacrifices of women in uniform who risk their lives daily.
The female officers demanded an immediate retraction of the remarks and a public apology to the women of the NPF, vowing that “no amount of intimidation or smear campaigns” would deter them from carrying out their duties with integrity and commitment to national security.
