President Bola Tinubu, has officially declared the African Military Games Abuja 2024 open.
The President ably represented by his Vice, Kashim Shettima, underlined the Federal Government’s unwavering support for the armed forces and its commitment to fostering military cooperation across Africa through sports.
In his address at the opening ceremony, Vice President Shettima expressed pride in Nigeria’s hosting of the prestigious Games, describing it as a landmark opportunity to strengthen ties among African nations while promoting unity through competitive sporting activities.
He urged stakeholders to sustain the energy and achievements of the games to ensure their continuation in subsequent years.
The opening ceremony was graced by high-ranking officials, including the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Gwabin Musa, and the Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, Air Vice Marshal Abidemi Marquis.
Both leaders warmly welcomed the athletes and officials, assuring all participants of the Federal Government’s dedication to ensuring a smooth, secure, and well-organized competition.
The colorful ceremony captivated attendees with traditional cultural performances showcasing Nigeria’s heritage, synchronized calisthenics displays by military personnel, and skillful drills by the Guards Brigade.
These performances underscored the Games’ theme of promoting camaraderie and discipline within the military.
Adding to the excitement was the ceremonial parade of participating nations, during which athletes from over 20 countries proudly displayed their national colors.
The lighting of the Games Torch symbolized the official commencement of the competition, setting the stage for what promises to be an intense and thrilling event.
This second edition of the African Military Games features 19 sporting events, with participants from nations such as Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon, Senegal, South Africa, Algeria, and Libya, among others.
With the theme Enhancing Military Cooperation Through Sports, the event highlights the importance of sports as a bridge for fostering peace, collaboration, and unity across the continent.
The Games are scheduled to run until November 30, providing an engaging platform for athletes to showcase their talents while celebrating African resilience and strength.
