The University of Lagos, UNILAG Alumni Association has on Tuesday, 8th October 2024 honoured the 22nd Indigenous Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olukayode Adeolu Egbetokun into its Alumni Association, FCT branch as a member of the Alumni association.
Alhaji Aliu Akosile who led members of the Association to the Force Headquarters, Abuja presented a plaque to the IGP as a sign of commendation, a moth flag to induct him officially into the FCT branch of the association and a lapel, from the National president of the Alumni association, which says, the president endorses his induction into the UNILAG Alumni Association.
Speaking at the indiction ceremony, Alhaji Aliu Akosile described the IGP Egbetokun as a good ambassadors of the institution, saying, UNILAG IGP Egbetokun's alma mater and ever since, in the last 36 years the Alumni association has taken tracking of what the IGP has been doing throughout his career years.
Akosile said, "the Alumni Association has been very delighted, very happy, and in fact, we have shown him as a role model in most of our discussions."
He noted that, the FCT felt that first of all, we need to induct him formally to welcome him to the FCT branch and then secondly, to induct him officially as a distinguished alumnus of the FCT branch.
"So, our presence here today is clearly to show our appreciation for his being a good ambassador, and also to encourage him to continue to do the good he is doing. Policing is difficult and challenging world, worldwide.
"We see all over the world how people are treated by police, even in advanced countries, in America, we are seeing pictures in Europe but in Nigeria, it's of course a balancing act and one of the things the University of Lagos tried to save us of is the fact that whenever we go on strike or on demonstration, we don't vandalize
"But in doing that, as an alumnus association, we've found as a situation where people demonstrate and vandalize public institutions, public property, private property, that is not demonstration, it's violence. So, our own attitude to expression of such freedom is to say that people who do that should have everything.
"So, it is in our tradition as alumni members, to tell our members all over the world that wherever they are, they should be perfect ambassadors of the University of Lagos." he said
Responding, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olukayode Adeolu Egbetokun thanked members of the FCT branch of the UNILAG Alumni Association led by Mr Aliu Akosile, noting that their visit today brings back fun mmemories of their time at the University of Lagos
"I still recall the strong discipline instilled on us as student of UNILAG to maintain peaceful and respectful environment in the University. DDuringprotest, we were encouraged to express our grievances without resulting to violence or destructive tendency.
The IGP noted that the values incorcated in him as student of UNILAG has had lasting impact on his life and on my career as a police officer and he is extremely grateful for all these values instilled in him when he was student of the institution.
He assured them that he is going to support the programmes by the FCT branch of the Alumni association of UNILAG, most especially he will personally contribute to the scholarship scheme of the FCT Branch.
