Fact Check: Is General Yakubu Gowon Dead?

CLAIM: News broke today claiming that the former Military Head of State General Yakubu Gowon died at the age of 89. The news said the retired Nigerian army general who was also retired Military Head of State died of cancer in the lung.

VERIFICATION: Adeyeye E. Ajayi mni, Personal Aide to General Yakubu Gowon in a statement said General Yakubu Gowon is alive, noting that the retired General said he is still around and well. He is not in a hurry" 

The man that died is Prof Samuel Edoumiekumo Gowon, Former VC and immediate past Vice Chancellor of Niger Delta University.

The former V.C. died from Cancer of the lungs.

CONCLUSION: The news about the retired General is not only mischievous but misleading.
