– An anti-corruption coalition called on the EFCC to
probe Senator Dino Melaye over his “flamboyant and
opulent lifestyle”
– The group mentioned several instances of questionable
wealth belonging to the senator
– It also blasted Melaye for gloating on social media
about his wealth and luxury toys
Civil Society Network Against Corruption (CSNAC),
an anti-corruption coalition, has called on the Economic
and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to probe Senator
Dino Melaye over his “flamboyant and opulent lifestyle”.
In the petition signed by Olanrewaju Suraju, the chairman
of CSNAC, the group mentioned several instances of
questionable wealth belonging to the senator representing
Kogi West senatorial district.
The anti-corruption coalition recalled the media report
claiming that Melaye purchased a home in Abuja estimated
at 1.3 billion Naira.
“The said property which is located at 11 Sangha Street,
off Mississippi Street, in the Maitama upscale
neighbourhood of the city, boasts leafy trees, ornate
Roman-style columns, and decadent chandeliers hanging
from its high ceilings. According to the report, the property
is currently undergoing some renovations with an indoor
swimming pool,” the petition read in part.

Premium Times reports that the group also strongly
criticized Melaye for gloating on social media about his
wealth and luxury toys, which included expensive sports
cars, a Harley Davidson motorcycle.
“When asked by a Sahara Reporters correspondent about
his source of money for the payment of his luxurious
house, the only response offered was, “I am a
distinguished member of the Federal government,” the
group noted.
According to CSNAC, the excessively flamboyant lifestyle
of Melaye calls for serious questioning and investigation.
“As a public officer, his assets are a matter of public
interest. His public obscene display of wealth not
supported by any other known means of livelihood is not
justified by the allowances of a public officer.
“Therefore, he should be made to justify these rapacious
and brazen accumulation to the EFCC. With the prevailing
rate of crimes and criminality, involving highly placed
personalities and political office holders, no person or
individual should be considered sacred,” the group wrote in
its petition.
CSNAC also noted that the senator’s consistent presence
on the entourage of Toyin Saraki, the wife of the Senate
president, as she faced corruption investigations at the
EFCC has continued to arouse the curiosity of Nigerians.
Senator Melaye has recently bought a 2015 slingshot
estimated at N4.78 million ($24,000).
The latest toy of the controversial politician caused a stir
among residents of Abuja and all social media users.
Nigerians wondered if is it a part of #BuyNaijaToGrowNaija
campaign aimed at encouraging patronage of made in
Nigeria products and grow the country’s currency.
