Gambian President, Prof Dr Sheik AJ Jammeh presented plots of land to some Nigerians film actors on Saturday, October 11 through his Vice, Dr Mrs Isatou Njie-Saidy, at the Presidential palace in Banjul.
This was in a bid to recognize these Nollywood stars for their immense contribution to the continent.
Those that benefitted from goodwill were Monalisa Chinda, Chika Okpala (Zebrudaya), Segun Arinze, Francis Duru, Eucharia Anunobi, Ejike Asiegbu, Patience Ozokwor, Tony Umez, Ngozi Ezeonu, Kanayo O Kanayo, Harry B Anyanwu, Chinedu Ikedieze, Osita Iheme, Rukiat Masud and Ghanian actress Jackie Appiah.
Making allusion to the reason for the gesture, the President made it clear that he shares the belief in pan Africanism and values that Nollywood has also helped to promulgate to thHe asserted that the gift was to encourage the stars to see the country as their home. In his words,
“Nollywood and Ghollywood have been able to capture and tell our stories better than any outsider can do. Africans relate to your stories and same with those in the diaspora and the Caribbeans and around the world,” the President said.
