No fewer than 11 persons were burnt to death
while many were injured on Thursday in a road
crash that occurred on the Ile-Ife-Ondo road at
Oke Igbo town in Ile Oluji/Oke Igbo Local
Government Area of Ondo State.
According to an eyewitness, the accident which
happened at about 7.45pm, was caused by the
over speeding of one of the drivers of the
affected vehicles.
The eyewitness narrated that the driver of a
Toyota Camry lost control of the vehicle after a
burst tyre while on a very high speed.
He was said to have swerved to the other side of
the road and collided with an 18-passenger
commercial bus coming from the opposite
direction.
The two vehicles were said to have burst into
flame on impact with 11 of the occupants of both
vehicles burning beyond recognition while
others, including a toddler, sustained varying
degrees of injuries.
It was gathered that the victims of the accident
were rushed to the Trauma hospital in Ondo town
where they were receiving medical treatment
while the corpses of the victims had been
deposited at the morgue of the General Hospital,
Ondo town.
However, efforts to reach the Head of Operation
of the Federal Road Safety Commission , Mr
Adewumi Malomo, on the telephone was
unsuccessful as he did not pick calls made to his
set as of the time of filing this report.
The State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr
Wole Ogodo, said he did not have any
information on the accident because it did not
happen in the state command’s jurisdiction.
