david oyelowo calls out the academy for racial snub
Wow. This is an incredibly poignant and important point he's making!
David Oyelowo who played Martin Luther King Jr. in Selmaand had one of the most surprising Oscar snubs this year decided to address the issue head on.
While speaking at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, the 38-year-old actor was asked about the film's snub by the Academy and he kind of joked about it at first (above).
But when David got serious, he got SERIOUS and his answer is absolutely FLAWLESS!
Essentially, he replied:
"We've just got to come to the point whereby there isn't a self-fulfilling prophecy —a notion of who black people are— that feeds into what we are celebrated as, not just in the Academy, but in life generally. We have been slaves, we have been domestic servants, we have been criminals, we have been all of those things. But we have been leaders, we have been kings, we have been those who changed the world."

The Selma actor even called them out for honoring those who played "subservient" black characters and not those who were leaders!

Case in point: 12 Years A Slave last year and now Selma this year.
Ch-ch-check out David's whole point about The Academy (below)!!!
