THE Federal Government has revealed that it is considering a housing project for veterans in the Nigerian military and widows of fallen heroes.
This was made known on Monday by the by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Defence, Aliyu Ismaila, while inaugurating the Armed Forces Remembrance Day Celebration National Planning Committee, in Abuja.
Ismaila, who was represented by the Director, Finance and Accounts, Alhaji Babayo Shehu, said the veterans had contributed to the development of Nigeria through the protection of the country’s territorial integrity.
He, however, said “accordingly, the ministry is considering a housing project, recognition of the widows of our fallen heroes and poverty alleviation programme for our surviving veterans. Policies are being put in place to realise these laudable initiative.”
He also recalled that “during this year’s emblem launching, the president, Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, requested for a programme to enhance the welfare of our veterans.”
While charging the committee, led by Brigadier-General Ade Fadunsi, the Permanent Secretary warned that the ministry would not accept any shoddy performance.
Ismaila, however, said the preparation of Armed Forces Remembrance Day Celebration kicks off today, with the climax on the Remembrance Day Celebration on January 15, 2015.
