Today marks exactly the first anniversary of the air disaster in which one hundred and fifty-three passengers and others on the ground died as an MD 83 aircraft belonging to Dana Air crashed into buildings in Lagos.
That accident threw many homes and families into mourning.
In this special report, Radio Nigeria aviation correspondent revisited the ugly incident of that fateful day, the payment of compensation to families of the dead as well as the lessons learnt from the crash.
“Today marks the one year remembrance of the Dana flight that crashed at Iju-Ishaga area of Lagos State where about 163 passengers and crew members lost their lives. These were aside ground victims. As Nigerians remember the national disaster that occurred on June 3, 2012, issues are yet to be resolved concerning compensation of victims. It was reported that 11 of the 125 families of victims have received full compensation.
Ground victims and their relations are equally complaining that they have not been settled. For instance, one of the major ground victims, Pastor Daniel Omowunmi on many occasions had taken on the Dana Company including protesting at the company’s office on Allen Avenue, Ikeja.
Meanwhile, Federal Government on Thursday, May 30 reassured those involved of its effort in ensuring prompt payment of their insured claims to legitimate relations of the victims of the ill-fated aircraft.
Speaking at the Aviation Safety Week in Abuja, Minister of Aviation, Stella Oduah lamented that the delay in payment to some families was occasioned by legal tussles and lack of proper documentation from victims’ families and promised that government would not rest until all verified claims are paid to families of the victims in consonance with existing regulations and statutory provisions of the industry.
Presently, Lagos State government has turned the scene of the crash into a monument. A visit to the site revealed that construction work on the monument was still going on while men are still working on the roads.
The work being done by the Lagos State Ministry of Works and Infrastructure would be commissioned today. Also drainage construction is being undertaken on roads that lead to the site. The road construction being carried out by HFP Engineering Nigeria Limited include Olaniyi and Okusanya Streets.
