Fast rising Nigerian Gospel minister, Ekundayo Oluwaseun, best known as Debbysax shared her journey into the Gospel and being one of the Nigerian female Saxophonist in southwestern part of Nigeria. In this Interview with Spye Lifestyle the mother of two announced her switch to full-time saxophonist and gospel ministration.
Tell us about your journey to music industry:
Debbysax: The journey started when I was small. I love singing and dancing. When I am walking on the road, washing clothes, plates I do sing and dance. My mum do say something then that if you want to sing and dance, let us know on time so as to link you up with some of the Gospel Artiste they know. I would just smile. This music of a thing i can say that I inherited it from my parent because they love music so much, especially my father, was a musician, he plays keyboard, local drums and he can as well make it.
I have been part of children choir, later graduated to adult choir. When I was in SS 3, I was appointed as the Chapel prefect but throughout those years I did not take it serious, there were so many songs that comes to my mind then while playing or washing something but I never know that it was composed songs untill I got to Higher Institution. It was when I got to Higher Institution through the fellowship I attended (CAC CAMPUS FELLOWSHIP, RUGIPO CHAPTER) and my Choir Coordinator then (Sister Moradeke Ruth) now Mrs. Obolanle was the one that trained, tutored, groomed me through the help of holy spirit.
I could remembered a year when we were preparing for Musical Concert in my fellowship and we were given the topic for it. In CACCF we composed songs. A friend of mine that we both lived in the same Villa (Sister Opeoluwa Sabainah) now Mrs. Opeoluwa Falade, did her own composition in to the form of classical when she showed me, I was impressed and I went on my knee then prayed to God to give me the grace, to compose songs and that was all. As I have said earlier I was doing it but don't know that it was composition.
When I was in OND 1 precisely, I saw a revelation that I was standing in front of millions of people singing and it was not once in 2015.
During one of our Cross over Vigil in my formal Church in Akure the Lord spoke through his servant after I finished leading the choir rendition (Oluwa se mi lore) that I should go and gather the songs I have that God want use me for his glory and he prayed for me. I tried to wax album that year but there was no money, help was not coming from anywhere, the following year(2016) I lost one of my elder brother which affected me seriously, that year went without doing anything till 2017 when I now did Didara L'oluwa Album consist of four tracks, after it I did single album Aanu (2021) and this year Beere loruko Jesu.
Debby Sax is my stage name as a saxophonist but the name of my choral group is Mighty Hand Int'l Gospel Singers. Debby Sax is from my name Deborah. I went for training in sax and music. Mentors: Akintewe Olakunle(Hayjaymulti), Oyewole Abimbola(Bimbo Sax), Akingbade Damilola(DM Sax), Matthew Marzu(Matt Sax), Ademiju Oluwdare Adesina(Dray Sax), Oyewole Abimbola (Bimbo Sax), M.Sax, Hayjaymulti, Baba Sax, DM Sax, and still learning.
What inspire Debbysax Album, Tell us your journey to Sax world?
What inspire this new album is that this song was used in one of our Special Programs in my formal church, the programme was tagged: Ask in the name of Jesus . It was this year January that the song kept on coming to my mind and I was directed to John Chapter 14 verse 13-14 that everyone need to speak out and requests from the Lord whatever we want from the Him this year. My husband too confirm it that the song should be produced.
Any challenges faced while producing this album:
Yes. When we wanted to start it, we were very rich but we just have faith that this album will release to social platforms and it came to pass. Another thing is laying and relaying of the album before arriving at this. Another thing is combining of rehearsal with house chores with taking care of the kids wasn't easy. At times my husband stays with them if he's not going out to construction site because he is an engineer but if he won't be at home I take them to one of our family friends or my husband's aunty place in order for this project to become a success. I will like to say big kudos to my husband (Engr. Oluwafemi Ekundayo) for monitoring, funding the whole thing from begining till the end. God bless you sir. Love you more.
As a female minister, how do you balance your ministry and your home affair: Hmmmmmmmm. God has been the one then the man He gave me as an husband, he is such an understanding, supporter and caring husband. It is not easy at all.
What's your advise to women in this same ministry as you:
My advice to women in this same ministry with me is that we should be strong in faith, we should be discipline, seek God the more, be a minister and not an entertainer, be submissive to our husband, even when we are financially okay than them or not, they are still our head. Others that are not yet married should not allow their gifts to push them to marry a wrong person, they should be sensitive, prayerful to know the right person for them. Someone that will back up their vision. We should be careful and pray against the spirit of pride, fornication and other things that can stain our clothes or tarnish our image.
