Two suspected Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists have surrendered to troops of the Joint Task Force North-East, Operation HADIN KAI, in Monguno Local Government Area of Borno State.

The development comes as the military sustains pressure on terrorist groups operating across the North-East Theatre.

According to the Acting Military Information Officer, Headquarters Joint Task Force North-East, Operation HADIN KAI, Captain Mohammed Goni, the two terrorists surrendered at about 8:20 p.m. on September 1, 2026, to troops of Headquarters Sector 3 deployed at Charlie 4 in Monguno town.

The suspects, identified as 20-year-old Jidda Modu and 21-year-old Kaka Kawu, reportedly handed over two AK-47 rifles, two magazines and eight rounds of 7.62mm Special ammunition.

Troops also recovered four Android mobile phones, one button phone, a pair of earbuds, a power bank, a Zenith Bank ATM card, a memory card, a USB cable, two head warmers and a bag.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the two suspects were among a group of 10 terrorists who reportedly left an ISWAP camp at Arinna Chiki with the intention of surrendering to the military.

However, the group reportedly encountered an ISWAP patrol while on their way, leading to an exchange of fire. The whereabouts of the remaining eight members could not immediately be established.

The military has since intensified efforts to locate the eight fleeing terrorists and ascertain their status.

The surrendered suspects and recovered items are currently in the custody of Headquarters Sector 3 for further investigation and necessary action.

The Joint Task Force said the surrender demonstrates the impact of sustained military operations against terrorist elements in the North-East, while encouraging others willing to abandon violence to lay down their arms and embrace the opportunity to return to peaceful life.

Troops, meanwhile, remain on heightened alert as operations continue to disrupt terrorist activities, protect communities and restore lasting peace and security across the region.
