The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) to intensify its nationwide crackdown on energy-related crimes, particularly the vandalism of electricity infrastructure and widespread energy theft.
The assurance was given when the Minister of Power, Hon. Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe, led a delegation from the Federal Ministry of Power on a courtesy visit to the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
The minister was accompanied by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr. Mahmud Mamman; the Director of Distribution, Engr. Mustapha Baba-Umara; the Director of Energy Resources, Engr. Kingsley Eneh; and the Minister’s Special Assistant, Mr. Martins Olajide.
The meeting focused on deepening collaboration between the Nigeria Police Force and the Federal Ministry of Power to address security threats confronting the nation’s electricity sector, particularly the persistent vandalisation of power infrastructure and the growing menace of energy theft.
Speaking during the visit, Hon. Tegbe called for sustained police support in safeguarding critical power assets across the country. He urged the Force to strengthen surveillance around strategic electricity installations and intensify efforts to dismantle criminal networks responsible for infrastructure sabotage and electricity theft.
In his response, IGP Disu reaffirmed the Force’s resolve to protect critical national infrastructure, describing the security of power facilities as essential to Nigeria’s economic development, industrial growth, and national security.
The Inspector-General pledged closer collaboration with the Ministry of Power and other relevant stakeholders to enhance the protection of electricity infrastructure, prevent acts of sabotage, and ensure that individuals involved in power sector-related crimes are identified, arrested, and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The renewed partnership underscores the Federal Government’s commitment to securing the nation’s power infrastructure and improving the reliability of electricity supply through enhanced law enforcement and inter-agency cooperation.
