Troops of Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK) have recovered a cache of illicit drugs during a cordon-and-search operation in Damasak, Mobbar Local Government Area of Borno State.
Security sources said the operation was carried out by troops of the 145 Battalion following intelligence reports on suspicious movements of unidentified persons around the Masakali area of the town.
According to the sources, the operation was aimed at identifying unwanted elements, recovering weapons and preventing possible infiltration of Damasak by Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists.
The sources said troops conducted extensive searches, screening and interrogation of residents and properties within the area.
Although no weapons, explosives or suspected insurgents were found during the operation, security personnel recovered a Bagco sack containing various illicit substances concealed in a dilapidated structure believed to have been abandoned by a drug peddler.
Items recovered included 350 parcels of suspected marijuana, 229 tablets of tramadol, 16 tablets of diazepam and 280 tablets of Zola.
The recovered substances have been taken into custody for further investigation and necessary action by relevant authorities.
Security sources said the operation formed part of ongoing efforts by Operation Hadin Kai to deny criminal and terrorist elements freedom of action while maintaining security in communities across the North-East.
The sources added that the overall security situation within the theatre remained calm but unpredictable, with troops maintaining high morale and operational readiness.
