Troops of the Nigerian Army have arrested a suspected drug trafficker and recovered approximately 235 kilogrammes of suspected cannabis during a snap checkpoint operation along the Lokoja–Abuja Road in Kogi State.
Security sources disclosed that the operation was carried out at about 7:50 p.m. on June 22 by troops of the 176 Guards Battalion deployed at the Quick Response Group (QRG), Abaji. The troops intercepted a vehicle around Chikara North in Koton Karfe Local Government Area, where they discovered 273 compressed packets of suspected cannabis weighing about 235kg concealed in the vehicle.
The suspect was immediately taken into custody, profiled, and subsequently handed over, alongside the recovered exhibits, to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and possible prosecution.
In a separate incident, suspected terrorists attacked commuters travelling on motorcycles along the Okoloke–Egbe Road in Yagba West Local Government Area of Kogi State, killing two persons.
According to security sources, the attack occurred at about 9:25 a.m. on June 23 as the victims were on their way to the Egbe Market. Troops of the 12 Brigade deployed at Okoloke and Okunran swiftly responded to a distress call and moved to the scene.
The troops evacuated the bodies of the deceased, while several other commuters reportedly escaped the attack. Security forces have since intensified patrols across the area to forestall further attacks and deny the assailants freedom of movement.
Military and other security agencies are continuing efforts to track down the perpetrators as operations to enhance security across the affected communities remain ongoing.
