Governor of Anambra State, Prof. Charles Soludo, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of retired Lieutenant General Chikadibia Isaac Obiakor, describing him as a distinguished military officer, patriot and global peacekeeping icon whose contributions brought honour to Anambra State and Nigeria.
Obiakor, who hailed from Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State, passed away on May 27, 2026, after a brief illness. In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Christian Aburime, Governor Soludo said the late military officer’s death was a painful loss, noting that his remarkable service to the nation and the international community earned him widespread respect and admiration.
The governor highlighted Obiakor’s illustrious military career, which began when he joined the Nigerian Defence Academy as a member of the 10th Regular Course in 1971 before being commissioned into the Nigerian Army Artillery Corps in 1973. During his years of service, he held several key positions, including General Officer Commanding 2 Division and Chief of Administration at Army Headquarters.
Soludo also praised Obiakor’s outstanding contributions to global peacekeeping, particularly his role as Force Commander of the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL). He noted that the retired general made history in 2008 when he became the first African appointed as United Nations Military Adviser for Peacekeeping Operations in New York, a position that reflected his professional excellence and international standing.
Describing the late officer as a disciplined leader, accomplished statesman and visionary, the governor said Anambra and Nigeria had lost a rare gem whose legacy of service, leadership and commitment to peace would continue to inspire future generations. He extended condolences to the Obiakor family, the Nigerian Army and all those affected by the loss, while praying for the peaceful repose of the deceased and strength for his loved ones.
