The Enugu State Police Command has arrested a suspected cultist and recovered a firearm, live ammunition, and other incriminating exhibits during a security operation in Oji River Local Government Area of the state.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, disclosed this in a statement, noting that the arrest was carried out by operatives attached to the Oji River Division in collaboration with members of the Neighbourhood Watch Group.
According to the statement, the suspect, identified as Chijioke Abraham, 25, from Awka in Anambra State, was apprehended on June 13, 2026, at about 2:00 p.m. following credible intelligence about his presence at a known criminal blackspot along the Garki-Ugwuoba axis of Oji River Local Government Area.
Police said a swift response by the operatives led to the suspect’s arrest and the recovery of a locally made double-barrelled pistol loaded with one live cartridge, as well as a lighter.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect may be linked to cult-related activities within the area. He is currently assisting investigators with information aimed at identifying and apprehending other members of the criminal network and uncovering their involvement in cultism and related crimes.
The Police Command stated that the suspect will be arraigned in court upon the conclusion of investigations.
Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to combating cultism and other violent crimes across the state.
He urged residents to remain law-abiding, vigilant, and continue providing credible and timely information to security agencies to support efforts aimed at enhancing public safety and security.
