Troops of the 22 Brigade under Operation Savannah Shield have successfully repelled an ambush by suspected terrorists during a fighting patrol in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State.
Security sources said the incident occurred at about 11:40 a.m. on April 29 near Shitoun village, when the troops came under a sudden attack.
According to the sources, the troops responded with superior firepower, engaging the attackers in a fierce gun battle and fighting through the ambush.
Two of the assailants were neutralised during the encounter, while troops recovered two AK-47 rifles, two magazines, 30 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, and three mobile phones, among other items.
One officer sustained injuries in the exchange and has since been evacuated for medical treatment.
The sources added that follow-up operations are ongoing to track down fleeing suspects and ensure security in the area.
