Operation Hadin Kai Commander Maj General Abubakar Raises Alarm Over Fake News on Military Operations

The Theatre Commander of Joint Task Force North East, Operation Hadin Kai, Major General Abdulsalam Abubakar, has expressed concern over the growing spread of fake news and misinformation surrounding military operations in Nigeria, warning that such narratives undermine ongoing counterterrorism efforts.

Speaking with Security Digest at the Theatre Headquarters in Maiduguri, Borno State, the Commander noted that while security challenges are not unique to Nigeria, the manner in which countries manage and project narratives during crises remains a vital aspect of national security.

Major General Abubakar stressed the need for media professionals and information managers to exercise responsibility and professionalism in disseminating information, particularly in the context of asymmetric warfare.

According to him, “the role of the media is crucial in asymmetric warfare; however, a few individuals continue to inadvertently provide oxygen to terrorists through the narratives they promote.”

The Theatre Commander also criticised the activities of some self-acclaimed citizen journalists, accusing them of spreading false and misleading reports capable of distracting security agencies from their ongoing operations against insurgents and terrorists.

Reacting to a recent viral social media report alleging poor feeding conditions among troops, Major General Abubakar dismissed the claims as entirely false and misleading, insisting that personnel under Operation Hadin Kai are adequately catered for.

He disclosed that the operation has instituted a dedicated “Food Committee” responsible for monitoring the quality, preparation, and distribution of meals to troops across operational areas within the theatre.

The Commander further emphasised that troop welfare remains a top priority under his leadership, adding that field commanders are held directly accountable for the wellbeing of soldiers under their command.

“Commanders who cannot take care of their troops risk losing their command,” he stated.

Major General Abubakar reiterated that reports circulating on social media about inadequate troop welfare do not reflect the realities within Operation Hadin Kai and urged members of the public to rely on verified information and responsible journalism when reporting security-related matters.
