President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced the successful elimination of a senior Islamic State (IS) commander, Abu-Bilal Al-Manuki, also known as Abu-Mainok, during a joint counterterrorism operation conducted by Nigerian and United States forces in the Lake Chad Basin.

In a statement issued from the State House in Abuja, the President described the overnight operation as a major success in the ongoing fight against terrorism and a clear demonstration of effective security collaboration between both countries.

According to the statement, the operation was carried out by the Nigerian Armed Forces in close coordination with the Armed Forces of the United States. Early operational assessments confirmed that Abu-Bilal Al-Manuki and several of his lieutenants were killed during a targeted strike on the terrorist leader’s compound.

President Tinubu said the operation dealt a “heavy blow” to the ranks of the Islamic State and underscored Nigeria’s determination to dismantle terrorist networks operating within the region.

The President expressed appreciation to the United States for its continued partnership in advancing shared security objectives, particularly in counterterrorism operations.

Tinubu also extended gratitude to United States President Donald Trump for his leadership and support, while commending the military personnel from both nations involved in the operation for their professionalism, bravery, and commitment.

He reiterated his administration’s resolve to sustain pressure on terrorist groups and intensify military offensives against insurgent enclaves across the country.

The Lake Chad Basin, which borders Nigeria, Niger, Chad, and Cameroon, has long served as a major operational base for terrorist groups linked to the Islamic State and Boko Haram. Security operations in the region have intensified in recent years as regional and international partners continue efforts to restore stability and protect civilian populations.
