Mali Defence Minister Sadio Camara Killed in Suspected JNIM Attack

Mali’s Defence Minister, Sadio Camara, has reportedly been killed in a deadly attack carried out by suspected militants linked to Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), according to emerging security reports.

The incident, which has sent shockwaves across the country’s political and military establishment, also left other top officials critically injured. Among those affected are Modibo Koné, head of the National Security Commission, and Oumar Diarra, Chief of the National Army, both of whom reportedly sustained serious injuries during the attack.

While details surrounding the location and circumstances of the assault remain unclear, early indications suggest it was a targeted strike against high-level government and military leadership.

Authorities in Mali have yet to release an official statement confirming the incident, and the full scope of casualties and damage is still being assessed.

JNIM, an al-Qaeda-affiliated militant group, has been responsible for numerous high-profile attacks across Mali and the wider Sahel region, often targeting military installations and government officials.

Security analysts warn that if confirmed, the killing of a sitting defence minister would mark a significant escalation in the ongoing insurgency, raising concerns over stability and command structure within Mali’s armed forces.

Further updates are expected as more information becomes available.
