Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has met with the wife of the new Inspector General of Police, Mrs Mutiat Disu, at the State House, Abuja, in a move aimed at strengthening welfare and empowerment support for police officers’ families across the country.
During the meeting, Senator Tinubu urged Mrs Disu to sustain efforts toward improving the welfare of wives of police officers, while also leveraging the social support initiatives of the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI).
Mrs Disu, who is also the National President of the Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA), said after the closed-door meeting that she was prepared to work closely with the First Lady to expand access to RHI programmes for police families nationwide.
In a statement issued by the Senior Special Assistant to the First Lady on Media, Busola Kukoyi, Mrs Disu said the engagement provided her with valuable insight into the First Lady’s programmes and vision for women-focused empowerment.
She said she intends to tap into the First Lady’s “wealth of experience” and align POWA with RHI interventions to improve the health, welfare and economic empowerment of police officers’ wives.
“The purpose of visiting her is to tap from her wealth of experiences and to know about programs she has for the masses, to see how the POWA can benefit from the programs,” Mrs Disu said.
She added that police families should expect stronger collaboration with the First Lady’s office, particularly in the areas of social intervention, healthcare and women’s empowerment.
“What the people should expect from me is that I am ready to work with Mama on this RHI as it affects our women since the RHI is basically for women and POWA is dominated by women,” she stated.
Mrs Disu recently assumed leadership of POWA following the appointment of her husband, IGP Tunji Disu, who took over as Inspector General of Police after replacing Kayode Egbetokun on February 24, 2026.
The meeting is seen as part of broader efforts to deepen collaboration between the First Lady’s office and strategic women-led institutions in support of vulnerable families and community-based empowerment.
